Remember this book from the Cover Wars? I did – so when I saw it in the library, I couldn’t resist. And wow, I’m glad I didn’t. This is a jolly romp of a book. And it has heart.

Thoughts; or, Read this if you like:

  1. Read this if you like reading.
  2. Read this if you like adventures.
  3. Read this if you like characters who have to make their own way in the world, one way or another.
  4. Read this if you like stories about characters who become friends, true blue will do anything for you friends.
  5. Female friendship: Sophie and Lil. (And not even the faintest hint of jealousy or comparison, even though Lil is drop dead gorgeous and rather better paid for less work as a result.)
  6. Female rivalry: Sophie and Edith – over a job.
  7. Male friendship growing out of an unfortunate encounter: Billy and Joe.
  8. Mixed motives, oh yes.
  9. Plucky, intelligent, and courageous protagonist(s) with distinct characteristics.
  10. Reference to the (laughable) boys adventure stories of the era (Billy’s beloved detective stories).
  11. Adults in varying degrees of (un)trustworthiness.
  12. A dastardly plot by unscrupulous villains.
  13. Minor (but also dastardly) misdeeds by ordinary people.
  14. Friendship, friendship, friendship.
  15. A glorious and atmospheric (uh, full-of-atmosphere) store, rendered in evocative and alluring descriptions.
  16. Also, the darned hard work that it takes to run said glorious store.
  17. Detectives!

I’m excitedly awaiting Sophie, Lil, Billy, and Joe’s adventures to continue this spring with the release in spring 2016 of The Mystery of the Jewelled Moth. Whatever will they do next?

… *cue announcer’s voice:* This has been a Snapshot. Tune in next week for our Double Feature: Nafiza Recommends and Janet Recommends (to everyone). Thank you for watching reading.
