The Secret Life of a Book Blogger — Steph

Hi there! I’m one of those who started The Book Wars blog back in 2013 when we were doing our Master’s (in Children’s Lit) together at UBC. It seems like a lifetime ago. Since starting up and excitement of being freshly pressed, the excitement of each new follower, and, most recently, the excitement of switching over to our own domain well… A lot has happened! I went on a looong hiatus/maternity leave and now I’m struggling to come back to the task, and the joy, of blogging on a regular basis. I am loving it.

How long have you been a blogger?

Before 2013 I had attempted to start a couple of blogs. Y’know, the personal spill-you-guts kind, but also a Movie & Adaptation/Cooking blog, that was fun, but I never kept it up. I have truly been a blogger only since 2013, but I have always loved the concept and the community.

At what point do you think you will stop?

Never! Or at least, that’s what I’d like to say. But, as witnessed, it is so easy to slip out of the habit. I think that when life provides absolutely no time for it, I’ll have to quit. I will be sad to let it go, but now I see how hunkering down to blog–and I mean really think about, source, craft a post or review–takes time, and time is precious. I love spending my time here, but when I have none to spend, I’ll just have to stop.

What is the best part?

Connecting with people over the things that I love! I love it when I get comments on my post–whether these commenters are just saying “bravo!” or they are giving their own mini-post, or even if they criticise or disagree, that’s the best! Conversations. 🙂

What is the worst part?

Writing a bad review. I think this is a very Canadian feeling, but I just hate being brutally honest, but I feel that I owe it to the author and the audience. If I had qualms, I have to share them.

How long does it take you to find/create pictures to use?

Not long, I either google and source, or snap a picture with my phone and upload it–easy peasy.

Who’s your book crush?

I have so many. I kind of crush on Todd from The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. I have also been said to crush on Hamlet though, lol.

What author would you like to have on your blog?

I have always tended towards the popular fiction and so I think I would really love to have J.K. Rowling or Susanne Collins on here. Raina Taglemieyer, or Rick Riordan.

But, thinking smaller, it would be great to get more Canadians, the more Canadians the better!

What do you wear when you write your blog?

Everything from my pajamas to baby-splattered clothes at the end of the day. With a child and a job, it takes me all day to write a blog post. It is done in spurts.

The answer: I never wear the same thing twice!

How long does it take you to prepare a post?

A couple of hours, usually. The post also usually swims around my head for a little while until I have settled on my framework, or my title and the idea of the point or thesis. So, I guess, a couple hours plus a week of head-space?

How do you feel about the book blogger community/culture?

I love it. I know I’m not a big commenter *shame on me* but I am always trying to read what my fellow bloggers are saying and what they are talking about. It is interconnected but it is also connected to the outside world in so many exciting ways. It’s a lot of fun.

What do you think one should do to have a successful blog?

Above all else, you need to have good content. You need to use great images, reel the reader in with a great first sentence and follow through with a thoughtful & thought-provoking post, and you need to create a little buzz and conversation. Leave room for questions and comments–oh, and get on social media!

Hello folks, a couple of days ago was the first day of summer. … That has nothing to do with the post but I thought I’d mention it. Well summer in our hemisphere anyway. Do you have bookshelves/cases/book collections that you are immensely proud of? Would you like to share a picture of it with […]

Sing a Song of Motherhood . . .

Dear Readers, It’s been a while! I haven’t posted a personally hand typed post in a very long time and I’m feeling a little rusty. Sure, participating in TTT and Cover Wars is fun and all, but I have missed simply writing out my thoughts on books. So, where have I been? Hanging out with […]
